Smoothies In Palm Springs Are Cool, Just Like You

In the heat of the summer, a big breakfast can feel oppressive. Instead, your body is craving something cold, nutritious, and delicious. That’s why smoothies were invented in Palm Springs.
OK, they weren’t invented in Palm Springs, and have ancient and global roots. However, Los Angeles re-popularized them in the 1930s. Why? Because of a little 1938 invention called the Waring blender. Health food stores and juice bars in L.A. began offering blended fruit drinks for health-conscious customers. But things really took off when Steve Kuhnau founded Smoothie King in 1973, selling smoothies as a healthy alternative to milkshakes. And just like all the celebrities in Hollywood, the smoothie found its way to Palm Springs.
Of course, it had existed before in Palm Springs, but it was called a date shake, and I can’t recommend them enough. Especially the one at Tutti Frutti. Speaking of which, it is not in this list nor is any shop that opens after 11 a.m. We’re talking a liquid breakfast — and not the kind from 1960s Palm Springs. But if that’s your jam, you do you. We’re not here to judge.
