Hotel Backstory

Town & Desert Hospitality grew from Dave Dean’s interest in preserving Palm Springs architecture while making historic properties comfortable and relevant for today’s guests. With a background in hospitality design and engineering, Dean approaches each hotel with an eye toward what made it distinctive in the first place—and what it needs to continue working as a hotel.

The company now operates several Palm Springs boutique hotels, including four designed by Herbert Burns. Rather than substantially reimagining these properties, Town & Desert has focused on preserving their architectural character while thoughtfully updating them for contemporary travelers.

Dean thinks of each property as its own “ecosystem,” with courtyards, gardens, gathering places, and quieter spaces that allow guests to experience a hotel in different ways. The goal isn’t to create a single prescribed experience, but to give people room to find the places that feel right to them.

That philosophy extends to hospitality itself. Led by Karima Zaki, CHA, Town & Desert’s on-site managers are a visible part of each property. They get to know their guests, understand the hotels they manage, and help create the personal, relaxed experience that has long been part of Palm Springs’ small-hotel tradition.
