La Maison: A touch of France in the heart of Palm Springs

At La Maison, it can be hard to remember you're actually in Palm Springs, not France.

Owners Richard Slosky and Cornelia Schuster opened the Mediterranean-style boutique hotel on Feb. 1, 2012, after running a bed and breakfast in Salt Spring Island, Canada. There, they grew 20 varieties of lavender and had more than 100 plants. Some of the traditions they started in Canada — leaving a lavender sachet on guest beds, serving lemon lavender loaf and lemon lavender scones — they still do at La Maison, a property that feels like the French Riviera.

"It's a truly relaxing place," Richard said.

All of the rooms have been renovated, and the bathrooms are gorgeous, with beautiful marble and granite and walk-in showers. Rooms overlook the pool and gardens, and there are three separate fountains across the property, offering a soundtrack of cool, trickling water. Richard and Cornelia love to surprise their repeat guests with gift certificates and bottles of prosecco when it's their anniversary or a homemade birthday cake, topped with real dried rose petals.

"It's what we would like to have done for us, things that have impressed us over the years while we've traveled," Richard said. "One thing we hear the most from guests is that they love our attention to detail."

This beautiful property attracts couples, and has been voted by guests on Trip Advisor the second most romantic hotel in the United States and the twentieth most romantic in the world.

"We are so lucky in we get to meet the most wonderful people from all over the world," Richard said. "We look after our guests, and make sure they have what they need. The name 'La Maison' is French for 'my home' or 'the home.' It's more than an inn or hotel — people tell us they feel like they are at home."
